Important Information About Registration for Hava
Nashira 2011
(please note this information was provided by OSRUI and is only
posted here as a courtesy.
This web site is NOT maintained by OSRUI, and all inquiries for further
information should be directed to OSRUI.)
This year we will have online registration and registration will open on Sunday, March 13, at 6 pm CENTRAL time. That’s 7 pm Eastern, 5 pm Mountain, and 4 pm Pacific. A reminder, move your clocks forward the night of Saturday, March 12 as daylight savings time begins.
Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is filled.
There will be 4 links on the Hava Nashira website (http://osrui.urjcamps.org/yearround/programs/havanashira/) depending on which type of housing you are signing up for:
1. semi-private housing with private bath (Soref, Lodge and Bayit housing)
2. semi-private housing with washrooms at the end of the hall (Nerenberg Family
Center)
3. dorm cabins or off-site housing
4. the wait list for the program, once the various categories of housing fill.
You will not be able to submit your registration form and the link(s) will no
longer be active as each category of housing fills.
Information on the different housing is available on our website: http://osrui.urjcamps.org/rentals/facilities/housing/
If you are going to be a songleader at a URJ camp this summer, you will receive separate instructions directly from your camp director on how to sign up for the URJ songleaders’ track if you are planning on staying in dorm housing. For URJ songleaders who are interested in attending other Intensives, or want to stay in other housing, please use the regular Hava Nashira applications which will be available on our website on Sunday, March 13, at 6 pm Central time. Space in the regular program and other housing is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Payment. When you sign up online, your registration will not be final. You will have a space reserved in the program, but your registration will not be finalized until we receive your check for payment in full. Your check must be received in our office within 10 calendar days of your application, if not, your reservation for Hava Nashira will be cancelled and offered to the next person on the wait list.
If your tuition will be paid by your camp, congregation, school, community center or other institution, you can do one of two things: 1. Request a check NOW (made payable to Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute) so that it will be ready to send in when you register. The fees are on our website. 2. Send in a personal check with your application with a note on it that says to hold your check pending receipt of a check from the organization. If we don't receive a check from your institution within 10 days, we will deposit your personal check.
We regret that we cannot accept payment by credit card as we are trying to keep the costs as reasonable as possible.
If you are not available on Sunday evening, March 13, we regret we are not able to hold space for you in the program.
Applications will be confirmed after checks are received, after April 1.
Program Information. If you have questions about the program, please check our website before you call or send an email. We post updates regularly. http://osrui.urjcamps.org/yearround/programs/havanashira/
Intensives and Electives. Again this year we will offer participants a choice of two intensives (major sessions), one for Thursday and one for Friday. Information on the intensives is now on our website. In addition a wide variety of electives will be offered. Details on the electives should be online by mid-April.
Scholarships. We’ve also been getting calls and emails asking about scholarship assistance for this program. We will share information with you about scholarship sources if we hear about them. Many participants have their tuition either subsidized or paid by the congregations, camps, community centers and schools they work for.
Shabbat Shira! Remember, last year we offered a new music workshop during the fall, Shabbat Shira. Please consider this program as well, which is scheduled for December 1-4, 2011. Read about Shabbat Shira and hear what 2010 participants said about the program on our website: http://osrui.urjcamps.org/yearround/programs/shabbat_shira/

Every year since 1992, in early June, people with a common interest in songleading, teaching and leading Jewish music gather on the grounds of Olin-Sang-Ruby Union Institute Camp in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin for the Hava Nashira Songleading and Music Workshop. At this unique event, some of the finest Jewish music innovators and composers, including Debbie Friedman (z"l), Cantor Jeff Klepper, Rabbi Dan Freelander, Craig Taubman, Julie Silver, Rabbi Joe Black, Cantor Josee Wolff, Cantor Ellen Dreskin, Merri Lovinger Arian, Cantor Jordan Franzel, Rabbi Lisa Zur, Dan Nichols, Cantor Rosalie Will Boxt, Peter & Ellen Allard, Josh Nelson, Ken Chasen, Shira Klein and Danny Maseng have shared their music and their skills. Guest visitors have included Shimon Cohen (z"l), Doug Mishkin, Cantor Alberto Mizrahi, and Theodor Bikel, Joshua Nelson. Participants of all ages, backgrounds, and religious practice come to improve their own skills, network with others and share ideas in a supportive, nurturing atmosphere.
This site has been established for several purposes. One is to serve as a connection between those who have already participated in Hava Nashira. Another is to make others aware of this unique opportunity. The primary purpose, however, is to serve as an online resource for all people involved in teaching, leading, and creating Jewish music, whether at camps, congregations, or community centers. We hope you'll find the information on these pages useful, and welcome your comments, suggestions, and criticisms.
